This Aperol Spritz Recipe is hands-down my new favorite drink.

It’s just perfect for so many reasons.

It’s light, it’s refreshing, and it’s just plain pretty.

The orange and red tones swirling around in the glass remind me of a beautiful sunset.

Did I also mention it’s low in alcohol? So it’s a bit of a guilt-free pleasure.

I have been drinking them recently in lieu of vodka sodas, which admittedly can just be boring.

And kind of dangerous.

Sometimes their lack of flavor can lead to one too many. Oopsie!

But apparently the Aperol Spritz Cocktail can also lead to  controversy …

The New York Times stated, “the popular, Instagram-friendly aperitif drinks like a Capri Sun after soccer practice on a hot day. Not in a good way.”

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

The nerve.

Of course, that was back in 2019 and our opinions about a LOT of things have changed dramatically since then.

Come to find out their main objection to the drink was the addition of cheap prosecco.

I could never condone drinking cheap prosecco.

So throw their argument out the window.

Sit back and relax as we show you how to make a great Aperol Spritz.

A proper Aperol Spritz Cocktail with a recipe that is simple and easy.

Sounds like a great way to start the evening.

But first, let’s start with some basics …

HOW TO MAKE A SPRITZ

What exactly is a spritz?

Come to find out the term has German origins and translates as “spray.”

To be called a spritz, a drink needs to follow a ratio: three parts bubbly, two parts bitter, one part soda.

A traditional spritz is garnished with citrus.

WHAT IS APEROL

The name was Inspired by the French term for aperitif, Apero.

Brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri introduced the liquor in 1919.

Its recipe is secret, but does include both bitter and sweet oranges, as well as rhubarb.

HOW TO MAKE AN APEROL SPRITZ

The drink made its debut in the 1950s and the Aperol spritz ratios are basically the same as any good spritz. Below is the best Aperol Spritz Recipe I’ve found:

THE BEST APEROL SPRITZ RECIPE

Three ounces dry prosecco
Three ounces Aperol
A splash of club soda or plain sparkling water (we used Perrier)

Pour ingredients into a large wine glass filled with ice and stir.

The key to a great Aperol Spritz is to be picky when selecting your sparkling wine.

While some proseccos are perceived as overly sweet, others can be dry.

The key, according to Liquor.com, to knowing which is which is finding the word “brut” (dry) or “extra brut” (mildly off-dry) on your label.

And it may be in tiny letters on the back of the bottle.

WHAT’S THE APEROL SPRITZ GARNISH

Surprisingly, the garnish for an Aperol Spritz cocktail is also a bit of a controversy.

Good grief.

I just want a lovely cocktail to drink before dinner without any drama.

But hear me out …

If you search “Aperol Spritz Recipe Bon Appetit,” you’ll find a decent recipe for this libation.

Until you get to the end. Then it’s kind of like a horror movie.

The plot twist comes when they suggest threading three pitted green olives on a swizzle stick to use as a garnish.

Their final step is to “gently stir the cocktail with the swizzle stick with olives.”

Green olives? In my Aperol Spritz recipe?

OMG. A thousand times “no.”

Aside from the fact I pretty much hate green olives (unless they are stuffed with blue cheese and even then, that’s pushing it), green olives should only be served in a martini.

Stay in your lane green olives.

And judging by the comments the post received, I am not alone in that sentiment.

A freshly sliced orange is the only acceptable Aperol Spritz garnish (technically, the addition of the olives makes the drink a Venetian Spritz).

Aperol is actually a type of Amaro (who knew?). I’ve traditionally had Amaro in The Paper Airplane cocktail.

It is admittedly a favorite, although not during the summer. The drink is great when the weather gets a bit chillier. And it’s cute too!
