Every year at the end of August, the top tennis players and luckiest tennis fans gather at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for one of sport’s greatest events and the final grand slam of the year, the US Open. And like any legendary sporting event, there is a signature cocktail attendees at Arthur Ashe Stadium will imbibe in while watching the greatest tennis players in the world in the venue’s famed stands. The Kentucky Derby has the Mint Julep. Wimbledon features the Pimm’s cup. So the question remains …

WHAT IS THE OFFICIAL COCKTAIL OF THE U.S. OPEN?

The Official Cocktail of the U.S. Open is the Honey Deuce and is an integral part of the US Open experience. The Chambord-filled Honey Deuce is the signature beverage of the tennis tournament and is almost as popular as the tennis match itself. Named in honor of the 40-40 tie score and the drink’s perfect melon tennis balls, the original recipe for the signature Honey Deuce cocktail was created by legendary Grey Goose mixologist, Nick Mautone, in 2006. The tasty combination of the renowned vodka brand with the raspberry lemonade flavor of the drink make it perfect on a hot day.

HOW MANY HONEY DEUCE COCKTAILS ARE SOLD EACH YEAR?

It’s no wonder the famed honey deuce cocktail has become the most popular drink at the tournament in recent years. Last year, more than 405,000 of the drinks were sold during the two weeks of the tournament. That’s practically half of a million. And the commemorative US Open cup in which it is served is a highly sought-after item. The souvenir cup made of hard plastic, features the names of the previous U.S. open winners.

HOW MUCH IS THE HONEY DEUCE COCKTAIL?

Despite its hefty price tag of $22, sales of the Honey Deuce, the official drink of the US Open, have skyrocketed in recent years. They estimate revenue from Grey Goose Honey Deuce cocktails will top $10 million at the 143rd U.S. Open. These staggering numbers make the collins-style drink the most popular libation by far among attendees. In comparison, only 1.8 million Honey Deuce cocktails were sold during the past 16 years combined. So it’s definitely safe to say it’s moving up the ranks!

WHY IS THE OFFICIAL COCKTAIL OF THE U.S. OPEN SO POPULAR?

My guess … it’s because of its honeydew melon garnish. The vodka cocktail, served in its commemorative cup, is adorned with a fresh fruit skewer that looks like mini tennis balls, making the drink both adorable and delicious, a perfect recipe for the official cocktail of the U.S. Open. But honestly, I think it would be perfect any time of year. In fact, I can’t wait to “serve” it as a Pickleball cocktail. The green of the honeydew melon is reminiscent of a pickleball as well. And as we all know, pickleball is growing in popularity almost as fast as the Honey Deuce.
