I love the simplicity and charm of each DIY fall garland.

While they look great with our modern aesthetic and furnishings, they work equally well when added to mid-century, farmhouse or traditional interior design.

So let’s get crafting!

Yarn (I chose two colors: deep orange and ivory)

A 4″ piece of cardboard

Brown pipe cleaners

Jute twine

Sharp scissors

A pen or pencil

HOW TO MAKE A PUMPKIN OUT OF YARN

First, wrap your chosen color of yarn around the piece of cardboard.

I wrapped the yarn approximately 75 times.

If you want a fuller pumpkin, you’ll need to wrap it more.

And you’ll also need more more patience than I have … LOL!!!

Next, carefully remove the yarn from the cardboard.

I actually bent the cardboard into a bit of a “V” to make it easier remove.

You can flatten the cardboard back, since you’ll need it for each of the pumpkins.

Using a piece of yarn about six inches long, tie the yarn bunch directly in the middle.

Tie it on one site first, then wrap it around the center and tie it on the opposite side.

Clip the excess yarn.

To create the pumpkin’s stem, cut a piece of pipe cleaner (approximately four inches).

Next wrap it around a pen or pencil.

Attached the pipe cleaner to the pumpkin at the center of the top.

Repeat this for as many pumpkins as you want on your garland.

I created 12 pumpkins for our garland. Obviously it depends on the length of garland you want!

This next step is key …

You need to make sure you have spaced your pumpkins evenly when attaching them to the twine.

Otherwise, it’s not going to look right.

I used the longer edge of the card, which was about six inches to measure and space them apart.

This worked like a charm.

To attach the pumpkins, I simply tied a knot around the “stems” …

DIY FALL GARLAND FOR A MANTEL TWO: TASSEL GHOST GARLAND

For this project you’ll need:

White yarn

Black yarn

A 6″ piece of cardboard

12 mm google/wiggly eyes

Sharp scissors

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Jute twine

Similar to the pumpkin garland, this project is all about wrapping yarn around cardboard.

For the ghosts, I wrapped white yarn approximately 50 times around a piece of cardboard about six inches in length.

Remove the cardboard and tie the yard together about a quarter of the way from the top, with a piece of black yarn.

This creates the ghost’s head.

To create the tassel, cut the bottom loops with a pair of sharp scissors.

Then repeat each of these steps for as many ghosts as you’d like on your garland.

Adding the eyes is the next step.

To ensure you get the eyes even, simply line the ghosts up on your work surface.

I attached the eyes with a bit of hot glue.

While the ghosts are lined up, you’ll also want to trim the black ties to an even, uniform length …

Finally, loop a small piece of jute twine through the loops of the ghost’s head and tie.

This will help to form the head and make it fuller.

Keep a bit of excess to attach the ghosts to the twine you’ll use for the garland.

Next, decide what length you’ll want your garland and cut a piece of twine to that length.

Don’t forget to account for hanging loops on either end.

Finally tie each ghost to the garland and trim the ends.

Like the pumpkin garland, you want to make sure you are evenly spacing each ghost.

HOW TO PUT GARLAND ON A MANTLE

Hanging things for the holiday season can be tricky.

You don’t want to do permanent damage to anything in your home.

But, you still want to have adorable decor to make your abode look festive and cute.

And you need it to stay up.

How annoying is it when … It. Keeps. Falling. Down.

I have found the best way to hang things, is to use removable Command Utility Hooks.

They are the bomb because they actually work

I always keep a pack on hand in our utility drawer when fun, festive occasions such as this arise.
